If you have scoliosis and would like to practice yoga, then this Yin class is for you. (You might also want to check out José's talk, ‘How to practice yoga with scoliosis’ first.) José begins by showing different variations of how to sit for meditation as it can be challenging, if you have scoliosis, to find a comfortable seat without strain or pain. The curvature is different for each person with scoliosis, displacing ribs and twisting the shoulders and hips. Therefore, your variation of sitting might not be amongst those that José suggests. If that's the case, please experiment with finding a comfortable position – if you can’t, please leave a comment below.
We’ll then continue with a breathing exercise that helps to release tension in the intercostal muscles and other areas of the torso. After that we’ll practice Yin poses that elongate and move the spine in all directions to encourage release, relaxation and opening. We end with a relaxation and/or meditation.
As always, different options are given for each pose so you can adapt them.
Props required: blanket, pillow, bolster, belt.
