Wenlin Tan – teacher feature

Autumn 2023... We caught up with Wenlin Tan – Qigong teacher and newest member of our EY family – who practices as a means to approach every moment, situation and encounter as an opportunity. Here’s what she had to say.

Wenlin Tan Qigong

Where are you from?
Singapore.

How did Qigong come into your life?
I first crossed paths with Qigong and Chinese Medicine as a child growing up in Singapore, and later as a globetrotting healthcare market research manager and yoga practitioner looking for relief from recurring back pain and a stressful work life.

Through my continued studies and embodied practice of Qigong, the Five Elements, and the creative cycle, I experienced ease, flow and intimacy with myself that trickled over into all aspects of my life, including my physical, emotional and mental health, and my identity and experiences as a woman. This profound experience led me to dedicate my life to sharing this knowledge to empower others to flourish and grow.

What is Qigong to you, right now?
A reminder and way of flowing with the Dao, the river of Life.

Why do you practice?
For me, the practice is a much-needed reminder. A reminder to myself that every moment, situation, encounter is an opportunity to become a better person, and to understand myself and the world better. The actual practice is also the means by which I do that.

Why do you teach?
I teach to practice what I learnt, and to share and connect with others.

What do you offer to your community, through Qigong?
A way of welcoming flow, ease and being in a world that tells us we have to struggle, strive and do to become worthy.

Favourite Qigong sequence?
It is hard to pick a favourite, but Qigong shaking followed by pulling from the heavens and spinal cord breathing is a classic.

Recommended reading (Qigong or not)?
Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine, by Harriet Beinfield and Efrem Korngold.

Favourite meal?
Fried noodles with egg, cooked by my mom!

What do you do for fun?
My sister says I always turn my hobbies/interests into my work, which is true… Occasionally I paint for fun, or fold origami when I’m bored.

Stranded on an island — what 3 things would you bring?
An interesting person to talk to, and something to play music on and earphones as a backup plan (in case the conversation runs dry).

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A ballerina! And at another point, a power ranger.

Surprising or little known fact about you?
Though I love water, I can’t swim to save my life!

Current projects?
2023 is the Yin Water Rabbit year, and I’m focusing on connecting with and embodying the Water element in all ways. One of these includes collaborating with different spaces and organisations to bring Aqua Qigong Yoga to their communities via programs, workshops and retreats.

I am also writing a book and creating a journey for changemakers and creatives called ‘Journey through the Creative Cycle’ that lies at the intersection of TCM, Qigong, 5 Element Theory, creative thinking, psychology and mindfulness.

Closing words?
This was fun!
