Ginger & Lemon tea

Cumin, coriander and fennel tea

Cumin, coriander and fennel tea is a classic yogic and Ayurvedic tea that can improve digestive health, reduce bloating, enhance nutrient absorption and calm tummy troubles. These spices help reduce inflammation, as well as boosting ‘Agni’ or ‘digestive fire’. You can make a batch of this tea and sip throughout the day for a continuous supply of the herbal benefits.

INGREDIENTS

(serves 1)

  • 1 litre water
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp honey (optional)

METHOD

  1. Add the water and spices to a large pot and bring to a boil
  2. Turn down the heat and simmer gently for 15 minutes
  3. Take off the heat and strain into a mug or flask to sip throughout the day. Top up with more hot water if needed.
  4. Add the honey if you want to increase the sweetness

Agni-boosting ginger slices

The things you consume before a meal can have a big impact on how well you digest it. Drinking a large glass of cold water just before or with a meal dilutes essential digestive enzymes, but other tricks such as consuming bitters or these agni-boosting ginger slices can greatly improve digestion. These agni-boosting ginger slices encourage the release of digestive juices and enzymes, and can help prevent bloating after a meal.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • Generous pinch of salt

METHOD

  1. Slice the ginger into thin discs and place in a bowl
  2. Squeeze over the lemon juice and add the pinch of salt
  3. Mix briefly
  4. Consume a slice about 15 minutes before your main meal to kindle your digestive fire
